Meet the WINNERS in our 2005 annual
pet lovers star search!

Our 2005 Pet Lover's Star Search
Grand Prize winner
is:

Zsa Zsa

ZsaZsa is a nine month old Pug. She is a playful pup who loves her sqeaky ball and snacks (especially bits of cheese)! She enjoys visiting with all sorts of people while her doting humans help out at Pug Rescue events (especially if there is cheese there). This photo was taken during one of her squeaky ball sessions. It shows her true pug personality: Loving, happy, and tired after a little exercise! Congratulations Zsa Zsa! You will forever be Queen of the 2005 pet lovers star search court of champions!

Our 2005 Pet Lover's Star Search

First Place Winners
(in no particular order):

Malena is a 4 year old Sable ferret. Petite and "delicate" looking, she is a three time trophy winner who was adopted from a shelter by her adoring human. Her human tells us that she has fast, tiny steps and waddles when she walks, making her a treat to watch, hold, hug, and kiss.

Balki is a beautiful 6 year old boy - which is a very respectable age for a hedgehog! His devoted human reports that he keeps himself young through fun and "spunky" antics. Here he is peeking playfully out of his hedgie bag.

When Chloe's humans purchased her, she was suffering from dental decay and more than a fair bit of insecurity. She had been crated a good part of her life, and didn't even know how to play or cuddle. Fortunately, her loving adoptive humans have helped her to overcome these early obstacles. They tell us that she has rewarded them by becoming a loving, happy, much adored member of their family. As you can see, she has also embraced her new role as mascot of her human's red hat chapter..

Two year old Twinkles is a shy, quiet girl who really doesn't get playful too often. According to her humans, she does love to pose for the camera, though. Our judges found her pose in this photo just too sweet to resist.

Greta, aged 5 months in this photo, is a miniature Dachshund. Her humans tell us that she is the most mischievous puppy they have ever known and that she "will do anything to get our attention, even climb up your legs to sit in your lap!" She is a notorious clothing thief and has occasionally been apprehended attempting to make off with her human's size 13 shoes - incredible given her tiny stature.
YES, there are fourteen first place winners this year... an unprecedented number in our contest. Incredibly, it was still very difficult limiting ourselves to fourteen. First place winners are listed in random order.

Mango is a beautiful orange tabby who has been accused of being "full of mischief" - a statement we find hard to believe after seeing those wide innocent blue eyes. Mango lives with his adoring humans and a great big sister called Mitten. His favorite toy is a little mouse that he carries in his mouth while playfully growling at everyone around.

Mollie is a lovely 3 month old Corgi who is much adored by her human who described Mollie as a "cheeky, loveable and adorable creature who has really touched my heart." Her human told us further that Mollie has been a comfort and a joy during difficult times. Mollie is a cherished friend. Congratulations Mollie.

Muffin (1 year old) and Scout (5 months olds) are pictured here during their first date (how embarrassing!). Their human played cupid for them by bringing Muffin to the bun rescue to choose a "husbun". After a few unsuccessful dates with other buns, Muffin and Scout settled in and snuggled. According to their human, "They would not move, you could barely fit a finger between them." Bunnies often find happiness in bonded pairs like this - bonded for love and companionship, not breeding.

Spook is nearly 17 years old, though she does not look her age. For the last two years she has been treated for hyperthyroid disease which requires medicine twice a day but she is very tolerant of taking them. She was a rescue kitten when she was approximately 6 weeks old. Her humans started taking her camping with them when she was very young and she took to it very well and has logged thousands of miles in the car and is quite a seasoned traveler.

Tessie is a 4 and a half month old English Angora rabbit. She was discovered accidently by her human who tells us that she was, "telling a customer about my newest obsession with hand making art felt when she told me she had just the friend I needed to meet. Next day she introduced me to Tessie who is now my muse, my house-mate and friend, and my generous, cheerful, co-artist who contributes to all my art felt pieces!"

Atlas is a beautiful retired racing greyhound who lives with his devoted human and his littermate, Icarus. Interestingly, Atlas and Icarus were apart for nearly 5 years before being reunited in retirement. Atlas' human tells us that he is "his brothers keeper, especially when Icarus, who has seizures, is feeling under the weather." Atlas and Icarus are devoted to each other and their human is devoted to them both.

Lily and Daisy are 1 year old abyssinian guinea pigs, sisters, and inseparable. Peeking out from under their blanket, their faces amuse their enraptured human. They sleep in a small foam bed tucked in, under their covers.

These adorable girls are 1 year old Dumbo rats, Viv and Breeze - though this is a "baby" photo, taken when they were just a few months old. According to their human, "Viv and Breeze are sisters who share a love of playful mischief. Their silly antics keep me amused for hours on end. They both love to chase my hand around and wrestle with it!"

Banshee's human reports that she "is extremely smart and athletic and she loves her mom (me). Banshee never ceases to amaze me and no matter how bad my day, she can make me laugh and forget all my troubles. She is my ray of sunshine." Awwwww... and we think she looks like an ANGEL when she is sleeping.

Our 2005 Pet Lover's Star Search

Honorable Mention

(these are just a few of the pets whose most precious of faces made our choice so difficult this year), in no particular order.

This is 8 year old Bo, short for Mr. Bojangles. Bo showed up on his human's door step one evening, moved onto her deck and it wasn't long before he moved into her house and her heart. According to his human, Bo almost died from a spider bite last year, but he is doing great now. He suffered permanent kidney damage, but you would never know it to see him. He is definitely a survivor.

Daisy is a three month old hedgehog; Jasmine is a 4 year old Himalayan cat. Who would have predicted that they would become fast friends? According to their human, when Daisy first saw Jasmine, she ran right over to her & snuggled into her fur. Now they take naps together all the time. Jasmine is so sweet & gentle that she snuggles right up with Daisy.

1 1/2 year old Gabriel is a beautiful ferret much adored by her human and it seems, mischievously hiding out in the hamper. Who will find her?

According to his human, "Garcia came to me as a small iguana only 4 months old. He used to sit on my head like a barette. A coupld of years later when I move to England, he came too. We spent a year in London then a year in the US and then 2 years in London again before settling finally in Indianapolis. Garcia started in an aquarium then grew into his hand made cage and now he lives in a tree decorated room in our home."

Scampy (pictured here at 4 1/2 months of age) is a bouncy, friendly cockapoo who is "everyone's best friend." His loving humans tell us that his adorable expressions and cute antics make him a center of interest in their home and that his life ambition is to be able to play with Cashew, the family's 13 year old cat.

According to her humans, Miss Margie is "amazingly sweet, inquisitive, and cuddly. She currently shares her habitat with two other female hedgehogs and one (neutered) male hedgehog, whom she terrorizes by jumping off of a small log into the pile of blankets under which they are sleeping. Miss Margie is also extremely nosy and whenever one of the other hedgehogs' makes a noise, whether it be one of happiness or anger, Miss Margie will come running and sniff around them, attempting to determine the cause of the noise."

Born in November of 2004, Zeek loves to snuggle while watching TV, eat mealies (heads chopped off please so they don't wiggle in the tummy), and run in his wheel. His devoted human reports, "we recently attached a bike odometer to his exercise wheel as we were currious how far he runs at night and were shocked to find that he ran 11.32 miles the very first night! We have determined that he must be a fitness freak!"

Tigger - 4 in this picture - is one beautiful cat. His adoring human tells us that through the years, "Tigger has been like a 'mother' to numerous stray kitties that my husband and I have found homes for. He protects them and bathes them as if they were his own. =)"

Maggie is a 6 months old blue rat. Her humans tell us that "After some time this shy, jittery girl became the most loveable, snuggly thing. Her favorite past time is misbehaving to get attention. When she is out, it's a full time job keeping an eye on her. She likes to escape to the boy rats lounging area.

At 3 Years Old, Killer is a wonderful friendly and loving little dog. She has friends everywhere. Her human tell us that she goes to work with her "daddy" and she always comes home with toys and treats. She plays with and protects 2 ferrets who love her. Her humans are very proud of her and love her very much.

At ten years old, Maurice is a lot of fun. His human doesn't believe he knows he's a cat. He thinks he is human. According to reliable sources, Maurice loves to box and is a sore loser. He hides around the corner and wacks his human with his paw as she walks by. His human gets a wack if dinner is late as well. He sits next to the computer so that he can offer his opinion on all correspondence. In short, Maurice is in charge! Gotta love this beautiful feline along with his huge "cattitude".

Super B, pictured here at 3 years old, is king of the rice box. He lives with his adoring humans and 7 sibling ferrets! It is clear though that Super B has made an impression on his family. He certainly seems to be enjoying life!

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our 2005 pet lover's star search - whether by sending in a beloved photo of your pet or by voting for your favorite pic. You have all made our star search both fruitful and exciting (and the judging tortuously difficult - we were up half the night for days)!

Nearly every entry had some overwhelmingly charming quality. In fact, there were so many utterly captivating photos and delightful stories, that we ended up with an unprecedented 14 first place winners - when we had originally planned for less than half that many. Luckily, our artist was able to accomodate more winners this year. Thanks to everyone for making this year's star search such a success. I hope you'll all be back next year.

We also chose 12 entries for honorable mention - though we would have liked to have chosen many many more for recognition.

All pet photos have been resized to fit this page; many have also been cropped and a few have been digitally enhanced in other ways - to better suit this page and our purposes. Our judges made their choice based on the original photos as submitted (you'll see this when the art work is finished - drawings will be based on uncropped photos as well); many factors were considered. Tie-breaking essays were absolutely crucial in a couple of cases - so be sure to include those next time you enter!

All decisions are final. Prize packages will be shipped out to the addresses that were included with the winning entries - so if you have moved, will be moving, etc., please email us and let us know as soon as possible. We'd hate for your prize packages to end up at the wrong address. Thanks again!
